Makbul Mubarak is a film-critic-turned-filmmaker based in Tangerang, Indonesia. He was born and raised by a family of teachers in the impoverished rural area in Eastern Indonesia, an “abandoned” region during the 32-years-long of Indonesia’s military dictatorship.

In 2012, he received the Art Major Asian fellowship from the South Korean Government to study film at the Korea National University of Arts where he graduated in 2014. He also participated at the Berlinale Talents and Busan FF's Asian Film Academy.

Makbul’s short film The Dog’s Lullaby won awards at the XXI Short Film Festival 2016 and Thai Short Film and Video Festival 2016. His other short The Malediction won best short film at the Indonesia’s National Film Award (FFI, Citra Award) 2017 and special mention at Singapore FF 2017. Recently, he directed A Plastic Cup of Tea Before Her, a short film commissioned by Astro Broadcasting Television Network along with nine other exciting Southeast Asian directors which premiered in Singapore FF 2018.

Makbul is currently developing his first feature film, Autobiography, which received script development fund from the Indonesian Ministry of Education, selected by TorinoFilmLab (FeatureLab 360), EAVE Ties That Bind, Berlinale Co-production Market, SEAFIC, Southeast Asian Film Lab, Luang Prabang x Tribeca Talent Lab among others. Most recently, the project won the main prize at Locarno Open Doors Hub and awarded CHF 50,000 for the production.
